This post is about…
My FRECKLES and how they continue to surprise me.
I just spent two weeks running around and basking in all the sun glory of summer, and you know what? I don’t remember the last time I did that! I tend to me an out-and-about type in the spring and fall when the weather is JUST PERFECT. Summer time, for me, is movies and book readings in lovely air-conditioned places where I can be considerably comfortable.
But this summer, I spent every moment running around in the sun and every 20 minutes re-applying sunscreen. I didn’t get burned once and what made me so happy were the FRECKLES that started to pop up everywhere! My shoulders are now covered all the way down to my fingertips. My knee’s have little speckles and even my toes had a few speckles.
I have spent 29 years avoiding the sun because every time I’ve spent lengthy periods of time in it, I have come away with a burn too painful to handle. I’ve been burned so bad soo many times that I have given up on skin care and decided the sun hated me.
Than, earlier this year a friend came to town and I spent 3 hours lying on the beach in the warm California sun. Finally I had decided to take proper care of myself and reapply my sunscreen as often as I could.
However, when I came home from our trip I found a heat rash all down my legs and my back burned. The dark red blotches from that rash still grace my calves.
What was I doing wrong!? I had done everything the sunscreen bottle and internet had told me.
It was at that point I realized, I don’t tan… I freckle. So, I need to stop trying to tan and accept my Irish heritage.
I bought a shawl, I bought SPF 50+, and I bought a sun hat.
I now enjoy the sun and the beach SO MUCH MORE because I know how to handle it. I know what my relationship with the sun is and I know how to enjoy it. You won’t find me lying in just my bikini on the beach anytime soon, nope. I’ll be all cover in my cute little shawl, sunglasses and sun hat securely on while I reapply sunscreen every twenty minutes.
And you know what, I love it! Because it’s me.
